Tetanus Vaccinations

Tetanus Vaccinations

Tetanus is a serious illness caused by bacteria that live in soil, saliva, dust, and manure. A deep cut such as may occur when stepping on a nail can cause bacteria to enter your body. This infection can lead to painful tightening of the muscles and which typically occurs all over the body.  This may lead to “locking” of the jaw, making it impossible to open your mouth or swallow. This is a medical emergency which requires treatment.

Vaccines which are given as a part of routine childhood immunizations can prevent tetanus. Adults should get a tetanus shot, or booster, every 10 years. If you get a bad cut or burn, see your doctor as you may need a booster. Tetanus infections can be prevented by immediate and proper wound care.
